The end of October looms and the Day of the Dead is upon us. As the sun rises on the dawn of Samhain AKA Halloween AKA Hallowe'en AKA Allhalloween AKA All Hallows' Eve AKA All Saints' Eve and AKA the lesser-known Hulloween, a book is published. Said book contains 26 stories of mirth and legend, written by goblins.
Well... not goblins as you'd know them. They're not green and you won't see them in fantasy films mining for gold. The creatures I'm referring to are writing goblins; humanoid creatures that spend time mining words in dark places and arranging them with spellbinding magic.
The title of this epic goblin-ridden tome is the To Hull And Back Short Story Anthology 2023.
Cover designed by Georgia Cook, featuring the epic expression of winner, Olivier Breuleux

I’m proud to present the eighth To Hull And Back humorous short story competition anthology. It contains a collection of 26 short stories from the winning, highly commended and shortlisted entrants of the 2023 contest. The book also contains a story written by each of the judges.
The stories in this book are fun and quirky, written by writers with vivid imaginations. This means all the tales are highly original and entertaining to read. I predict that each will become a fable of mirth and legend in the future.
The authors featured in this anthology are:
Alex Dutson, Avi Ben-Zeev, BV Lawson, Christopher Fielden, Clayton Lister, CG Casci, Dan Purdue, Emma Brankin, Helen Binks, Ian Tucker, John Holland, Katy Wimhurst, Kitt Harris, Lynda Nash, Mark Nutter, Mark Rutterford, Mary Ethna Black, Mike Scott Thomson, Noel Taylor, Olivier Breuleux, Rhys Timson, Sherry Morris, Susan Bennett, Susannah Plomer, Tim Craig and Tony Kirwood.
You can see all of their biographies on the 2023 competition results page.
The book’s cover was created by Georgia Cook - you can see her biography below.
The eBook was prepared and formatted by Angela Googh - you can learn more about Ange on her website.
The anthology was first released on Hulloween (31st October) 2023. The winner’s copy of the book will make a journey on the Highway to Hull, strapped to a two-wheeled chariot of rampant noisiness. You can learn more about the meaning of the previous sentence and the To Hull And Back competition (which offers the most awesome prize in the field of literature) on the main To Hull And Back short story competition page.
The winner's video will appear here sometime during 2024, after the trip to Hull has taken place.
The 2023 anthology book launch party took place on Thursday 25th January 2024 at The Small City Bookshop, in conjunction with Talking Tales, an established storytelling event run by Stokes Croft Writers.
Here is a picture of all the writers who performed at the event, with some of the To Hull And Back judges.
