Daft Definitions Volume 1

Daft Definitions Volume 1

Daft Definitions Volume 1 is a dictionary, full of bizarre and amusing definitions for everyday words, obscure words, place names, brand names and some words that have been made up. The book contains over 1,600 definitions that were submitted to the Daft Definitions Writing Challenge, run in the AotFFWC group.

"A must-have for anyone who loves language and laughter. This book is a riot of humour – over 1,600 inventive, often absurd and always amusing definitions for everyday words, obscure words and made-up ones. It’s the kind of book that invites you to dip in and out between chores, morning coffee, or bathroom breaks –and you end up laughing aloud more often than you expect. The definitions are wonderfully diverse: puns, cryptic turns of phrase, clever re-imaginings of familiar terms – sometimes bizarre, often witty, always entertaining. There’s a spirit here that calls to mind humorous dictionaries of old, but with a fresh, modern twist. What I love especially is how this book was born from a community effort: writers from around the world (including me) submitting ideas through the AotFFWC challenge. The end result feels like a party of playful minds, united by a love of words. Whether you love language, enjoy a bit of silliness, or want something light and fun to browse – this book is perfect. Worth every penny."

Daft Definitions Volume 1 is a comical dictionary. The book is full of bizarre and amusing definitions for everyday words, obscure words, place names and some words that have been made up.

This is the seventeenth book published via the flash fiction writing challenges, run on this website. The definitions were submitted in response to monthly challenges run in the Authors of the Flash Fiction Writing Challenges (AotFFWC) group. Huge thanks to all the group members who contributed definitions to this daft dictionary.

The challenge was created to have fun with words, provide encouragement for authors and support charitable causes.

The book was edited by Lesley Anne Truchet.

How Book Sales Support Charity

For every book sold, £1 will be donated to the Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) pen pal scheme.

Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) was established in 1966, starting with its flagship service, the Good Neighbour Scheme, a befriending service for people aged sixty-five plus. Over the years, the charity has evolved and now works closely with health professionals across Sheffield and Doncaster, providing older people with a helping hand when they need it most.

Their pen pal scheme, launched during the pandemic, has become an established service helping to keep isolated older people socially connected through letters and cards sent by members of the public. With contributors from all over the world, it is a unique project helping to reduce loneliness and bringing joy to older people.

You can learn more about the scheme on the SCCCC website.

  1. Thanks Christopher and I love the cover!
Thanks also to everyone involved in putting this 1st volume of Daft Definitions together. May there be many more to come! I’m honored to be a part of it and will tell everyone I know (all three of them ).
Daft Definitions is one of my favorite challenges in the group.

      1. I hope you seriously consider having a book party via Zoom! That would be so super for all of us big-time authors to get together and celebrate!
Just make sure it’s not at 8 am for me. That’s just too early. Thanks, Christopher!
