Daft Definitions Volume 1

Daft Definitions Volume 1

Daft Definitions Volume 1 is a dictionary, full of bizarre and amusing definitions for everyday words, obscure words, place names, brand names and some words that have been made up. The book contains over 1,600 definitions that were submitted to the Daft Definitions Writing Challenge, run in the AotFFWC group.

"I’m a big fan of The Meaning of Liff, a humorous dictionary written by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd. Daft Definitions reminds me of that. It's full of jokes and puns and cryptic meanings for words. Loads of fun!"
Susannah Plomer-Fielden, teacher (and wife of Chris, so she is slightly biased)

I'm pleased to present Daft Definitions Volume 1, a humorous dictionary full of amusing word meanings. The book was published on Friday 28th November 2025.

The book contains over 1,600 daft definitions. Pop it on your coffee table. Or in your bathroom. Dip in and out of it when time allows. And laugh. I dare you not to. You will. Oh, you will... Later, you will find yourself looking at words in different ways – searching for those hidden meanings, lurking in plain sight.

About Daft Definitions Volume 1

Daft Definitions Volume 1 is a comical dictionary. The book is full of bizarre and amusing definitions for everyday words, obscure words, place names and some words that have been made up.

This is the seventeenth book published via the flash fiction writing challenges, run on this website. The definitions were submitted in response to monthly challenges run in the Authors of the Flash Fiction Writing Challenges (AotFFWC) group. Huge thanks to all the group members who contributed definitions to this daft dictionary.

The challenge was created to have fun with words, provide encouragement for authors and support charitable causes.

The book was edited by Lesley Anne Truchet.

Huge thanks to Lesley for all her hard work. I'd also like to thank Angela Googh for coding the eBook (you can learn more about Ange on her website) and Lynda Nash for proofreading the book.

How Book Sales Support Charity

For every book sold, £1 will be donated to the Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) pen pal scheme.

Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) was established in 1966, starting with its flagship service, the Good Neighbour Scheme, a befriending service for people aged sixty-five plus. Over the years, the charity has evolved and now works closely with health professionals across Sheffield and Doncaster, providing older people with a helping hand when they need it most.

Their pen pal scheme, launched during the pandemic, has become an established service helping to keep isolated older people socially connected through letters and cards sent by members of the public. With contributors from all over the world, it is a unique project helping to reduce loneliness and bringing joy to older people.

You can learn more about the scheme on the SCCCC website.

Book Launch Party

We'll probably run a book launch party on Zoom at some point in 2026. Details will appear here once we have decided if and when it will happen.
