I took Christopher Fielden’s short story course and read his book, *How to Write a Short Story, Get Published and Make Money*, in 2024, and I can honestly say they changed the way I approach short story writing.

Chris doesn’t just talk about writing in broad, theoretical terms. His advice is practical, clear, encouraging, and, most importantly, usable. He helped me better understand what makes a short story work: how to tighten a piece, make every word earn its place, strengthen structure, and write with publication and competition in mind without losing your own voice.

And for me, the proof is in what happened afterward.

Since taking the course and reading the book, I’ve been published five times: in the 2025 To Hull and Back anthology, Micromance Magazine in 2025, The Haikuist anthology in 2026, the Fashion Institute of Technology’s 2026 What A Doll! exhibit, and Sweet Cute Magazine in 2026.

I’ve also had success in writing competitions. My story placed Runner-Up in the Useless Superpower genre in Writing Battle’s 2026 Verdant Owl competition, another reached the Thrilling 32 in the Fish Out of Water genre in Writing Battle’s 2026 Solstice Raven competition, and I received an Honorable Mention in Round 2 of NYC Midnight’s 2026 500-Word Story Challenge.

I don’t think that trajectory is a coincidence.

I’m also a subscriber to Chris’s Premium Writing Newsletter, which is truly a treasure trove for writers. It offers classes, resources, advice, and a wealth of publishing and competition opportunities. I’m constantly finding something useful to learn from, explore, or submit to. I highly recommend the Premium Writing Newsletter to writers at any stage who are serious about improving their craft and, just as importantly, finding places to send their work.

Chris’s course and book gave me tools I continue to use every time I sit down to write, revise, or decide whether a story is ready to send out into the world. He also has a wonderful way of making the business of submitting stories feel accessible rather than intimidating. There is an enormous difference between simply wanting to be published and understanding how to give your work its best chance of that actually happening.

Two years and five publications later, with some pretty exciting competition results along the way, I’d say the tools on Christopher Fielden's website have really delivered.

Chris' website is the Aladdin's Cave of witing resources - it is, in my view, unparalleled! I am also a subscriber to the premium newsletter, which has exclusive competition information and free access to all the workshops, which by the way are terrific fun and definitely worth attending. And all of the above is provided at highly affordable prices. Go, Chris, you are (in your own words) a legend!

It didn’t take long for my subscription to the Premium Writing Newsletter to pay off. Exclusive content in the subscriber resource area improved my writing dramatically through the free short story writing course. The monthly meetings, interviews and video workshops are fun, informative and inspirational. The constructive feedback on how to improve on what I had written in the workshops was invaluable. The list of competitions and publishing opportunities is comprehensive. I can thoroughly recommend this Newsletter to all budding and established writers. You won’t be disappointed.

I first encountered Chris Fielden’s website when studying creative writing as part of my BA in English Language and Literature through the Open University. The website was recommended through course materials as “providing extensive, author-based lists of short story outlets and competitions in a range of countries”. While these resources are extremely valuable, the website proved to be much more than that, as Chris runs frequent writing workshops, which are free to those who subscribe to his Premium Newsletter, and also offers writing services, including mentoring, editing, proofreading and critiquing of short stories, poetry and novels, all provided by experienced, published writers. Having become a subscriber, participated in workshops and used the critiquing service, I now feel part of a writing community which is greatly helping my development as a creative writer.

I seriously doubt that there are enough adjectives in the English language, or in any other language, for that matter, to adequately describe Chris, or what he does for me personally or for the writing community as a whole. However, I will do my best.

It boggles my mind knowing all that Chris does. His workshops that he holds are great. He always has informative guest speakers. The dedication that he shows toward helping fellow writers and authors to improve and be successful is amazing. This shows that he truly cares and his passion is real. Are you looking to be truly motivated? If you are sincere with upping your game as a writer, I recommend that you become a Premium Member. That way you can take full advantage of everything that is available to you as a writer. The price is extremely affordable and money well spent. It's more of an investment, really.

As an aspiring writer, who thought he could pen a half-decent short story but did not know what to do with them, nor had much confidence that they could be enjoyed by others, I found Chris Fielden’s Premium Newsletter service an invaluable investment. It tops me up every week with a compendium of up-coming competitions which saves me hours of research meaning more valuable writing time. My preferred genre of gently humorous short stories doesn’t fit every contest, of course – but the Newsletter means I can quickly identify and enter relevant competitions that might accept my humble submissions, saving me even more precious time and reducing the cost and effort of making wasted entries. As a result, I am proud to say that I have had stories published in two of Chris’ famous To Hull and Back contests as well as appearances in several other compendiums and prize list placings.

Chris genuinely wants writers to succeed and his Premium Newsletter reflects this, prompting me with useful tips and guides. A personal highlight are the monthly on-line writing workshops. I really enjoy these. Whether it is being able to listen to and question successful authors, learn about key areas, such as which tense to use and why, or share my work with others to review, I find these excellent, varied and always interesting and worthwhile. The regular nature of these workshops gives me focus each month and reassures me that I am not on my own when faced with issues from grammar to marketing. I have been able to incorporate many learnings in my own work and consider myself a better writer, though I’ll forever be work in progress.

I have no hesitation in recommending Chris’ Premium Newsletter to all rough diamonds. If you have the desire and ambition I am proof that membership can help you to sparkle.

This website was established in 2011. In 2024, it was redesigned. Between 2011 and 2024, thousands of people left comments. I’d like to thank every person for their engagement – it’s greatly appreciated.

When the website was rebuilt, transferring comments comprising hundreds of thousands of words was not feasible. I may re-publish the old Writing News page comments here at some point. In the meantime, please leave new comments below.

Hi Chris, I am a fan from Australia and I love your newsletters; I have been reading them for years. I have been writing sporadically for over twenty years – and find that I am quite a slow learner.

Nevertheless, I’ll continue with my dream as an author, screenwriter, and forever emerging poet.

Looking forward to knuckling-down to writing again, after moving from NSW to Kangaroo Island after my veggie crops were poisoned on the east coast by a witch (true story). They seem to have something against me which I find peculiar because I have been a naughty boy since very young.

Your monthly newsletter is one of the most outstanding, so the premium will be a bonus!
I am keen to subscribe to the premium newsletter and look forward to the link.

Best regards, Andrew

Chris Fielden
That’s brilliant, thank you Andrew! Great to hear you plan to continue to pursue your dream – we all have to do that 🙂 Hope the move went well for you. You should create a story based on the witch – sounds like a great premise.

Be great to have you on board for the premium newsletter, thank you very much! All the best to you.

Cheers, Chris
